God Forbid She's Reading

from $20.00

I found inspiration for this painting from an article I read recently in the Frankie Magazine where it talks about how scandalous it was for women to be reading back in the 1800s in fear that they’ll be getting “ideas” in their head.

Some paintings of women reading for their own pleasure during the 19th century were even criticised as immoral or crude.

Wild right?

So I painted my version of a lady reading based on the painting by French artist Berthe Morisot in 1873 called ‘Reading’ except in mine she’s got a kindle in one hand and a coffee in another to depict how the joy of reading back then and to this day still lives despite all the insane criticism back in the day.

This painting was done with mix media - a combination of watercolour, acrylic, pencil colour, marker and pen.

Painted originally on 300 gsm 100% cotton, Arche’s watercolour pad.

Will be printed and shipped on Kodak Fine Art Print Paper.
