This painting was inspired by simple, cheap yet delicious dinners I used to have with my family when we first migrated to Sydney, Australia. We migrated during the GFC from Indonesia to Australia and although my parents had degrees, they had to work in labour intensive jobs to make sure my brother and I are fed.
Even though we didn’t have much back then, our home was filled with warmth, laughter, and joy. My parents made sure I was never hungry. One of our favourite meals together was the classic Aussie meat pie with some tomato sauce with a hint of good ol’ Sriracha for that spicy kick, sometimes its Indomie with eggs and spam for some protein.
Every time I have a meat pie or spam, albeit simple and inexpensive, always brings back memories. It reminds me to be grateful of where I am today.
The bowl pictured is a common design found in many Indonesian street food vendors as a nod to my background and heritage. You can pluck any Indonesian off the street and show them this bowl and they will recognise it straight away.
I hope my art brings you comfort and joy the way it does for me.
